ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1 mg is a locally delivered antibiotic used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing for the reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. Periodontitis is an infection of the gums, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and may be linked to other serious diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and an increased risk of delivering a pre-term, low birth-weight baby.1-3 Using Microsphere technology, ARESTIN® easily and effectively helps kill the bacteria that cause periodontal disease.4,5
Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria build up on teeth under the gums, causing harmful infection and inflammation. This condition may eventually result in damage to the tissue and bone, which hold teeth in place, forming pockets around the teeth. As the disease progresses and these pockets become deeper, teeth can become loose and eventually lead to tooth loss.
When used together with scaling and root planing (SRP), ARESTIN® treats infection and inflammation, significantly reducing periodontal pocket depth, improving attachment levels and helping prevent disease progression.5 A combined therapy of ARESTIN® and SRP is more effective at fighting periodontal disease than SRP alone. ARESTIN® was shown to be effective in even the more-difficult-to-treat patients, such as perio-maintenance patients, smokers, or people over the age of 50.5-7
